THE deaf community has expressed its appreciation to Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad for approving the use of a new methodology for deaf students in 1978.
Federation School for the Deaf’s former teacher and principal Datuk Saleena Yahaya-Isa said the Prime Minister’s most significant contribution was in approving the use of Total Communication – a methodology of incorporating simultaneous use of speech, lip-reading, finger-spelling and structural signs. She said Dr Mahathir gave his consent for the new methodology for all schools which have deaf students back in 1978 when he was the Education Minister.
