  Coach encourages educating ‘whole child’

  DeVito spends last year as teacher of the year


STAUNTON - It took just four years of working at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind before Rocco DeVito was recognized as one of the state's deaf coaches of the year, but three more decades passed before he was distinguished as one of two teachers of the year by the Virginia Association for the Deaf.

"I was really clueless that I would even be considered for the award because I had been labeled mainly a coach by students and co-workers. The fact that I was chosen ... I was flabbergasted," said DeVito Sunday through an interpreter, his son, Rene
